Iditarod? - "I-Killed-A-Dog"
says it better. Not even in the ballgame with recreational mushing, this so called "Last Great American Race" exploits the natural traits of the Huskies and mixes used by the "mushers".  I am appalled by this "event" and encourage anyone who really cares about Huskies and animals in general to speak out in opposition of this race.  Money is driving these people to run these dogs literally to death.

A special note:
Heidi passed away on May 29, 2001. In her honor, this site will remain as it was while she was alive. In September, we unexpectedly lost her adopted Husky "brother", Jacob Amos.  Heidi was with us for almost 15 years, Jakey for only a little over 3.  Their deaths have left an empty place in our heart and in our home.  Please visit their tribute page. ~ Heidi's Mom

Just a brief history about me, Heidi ...

I'm almost 15 years old, and I'm spoiled rotten...but I'm so lovable people overlook that!

My "Mom"  always wanted a Husky, and I was a stray puppy, rescued by a Game Warden for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I was running around in a field when he spotted me, and took me to the County Animal Shelter. My Mom's boss's wife knew she wanted a Husky, and offered to arrange the adoption and pick me up to take me to meet my new "family".

I loved Mom right from the start...of course, I was a frisky little puppy, always getting into trouble. I was only about 7 or 8 weeks old when I got to my new home. I got into everything...and tried to *taste* everything, which got me into some real hot water at times, especially when I kept chewing on stuff that didn't belong to me!

Now, at nearly 15, I'm slowing down quite a bit, but I still love my treats and get excited when Mom or Dad come home.  I don't see as well as I used to, but I can smell that chicken strip treat just fine.  The hearing's a little dull, but I can still hear my "parents" tell me they love me - and that's all that matters!

While you're here, check out some of my favorite "Husky Stuff" on the 'Net, along with some other fun and cool sites.

LOVE YA!  (I'd lick 'ya if I could, but I can't reach...darn...!)

An Important Note from My Mom...

I can't stress enough the fact that Huskies are not the dog for everyone.  People fall in love with their looks and want one.  They have no idea, nor are they ready for the fact, that they will be taking on a challenge!  The best way I can describe it is that it's like living with a two-year-old for twelve years (or more as in the case of Heidi).

PLEASE - If you are thinking of getting  a Husky, do your research if you are not familiar with the breed.  They are wonderful, lovable animals, but they are "high maintenance" dogs.  They are escape artists, love to dig, howl and "talk" like mad, shed profusely at least twice a year (constantly if kept in doors or in a warm climate) and need plenty of room to run and exercise (but NOT off a leash or outside a strong, high fence).  They love everyone (pretty much) and will be content to take off with a stranger for a "ride", or show the thief who just broke into your home where the stereo and computer equipment is in exchange for a biscuit!

They don't do "tricks" like other dogs.  You can work for hours on getting them to "sit" and when they finally do so at your command and you get sooooo excited, remember... it was only because they felt like sitting down anyway!

But, don't let that fool you - they are intelligent dogs.   Headstrong and playful, they must be kept entertained or they will entertain themselves...usually by chewing up the sofa or something equally as important.    They are usually good with children, but not with other small animals.   Kitties beware...

I wasn't prepared for Heidi when she came into my life 12 years ago at 6 weeks of age.  If someone had told me what a handful a Husky could be, I might have felt that I wasn't ready for that.   As it turned out - I wasn't... but we came through it just fine. With some help from above and a warm fuzzy, big-browned-eyed Husky, I entered the world of the Siberian...

Would I do it again?... YOU BET!  Still know you want a Husky? Then with my blessings, I say -  GET ONE  - I truly believe you won't regret it.

And remember, there are many who need to be rescued from shelters or who are currently awaiting adoption from rescue leagues or are being "fostered" awaiting permanent homes.  And please, don't over-look an older Husky.  They make wonderful companions and have a lot to offer - including being a bit "calmer" than their younger counterparts - making them a really good choice for the first-time owner!
